International Highrise Award [ VIDEO ] Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) has won first prize at the International Highrise Award ceremony in Frankfurt, Germany.

The towers were designed by Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra.

The two towers are 119 and 87 meters (26 and 18 floors) high, festooned with over 900 trees, 4,000 shrubs and 12,000 plants, and aligned with the policies of reforestation and naturalization of the city of Milan. We are talking about a hectare of forest, or 2.47 acres — 400 kinds of trees from 8 different species — all watered by the building’s greywater.†

The plants serve to filter dust, pollen and pollution from the environment surrounding the towers. They act as sunshields in the summer months and weather shields in the winter, thus reducing both heating and air conditioning costs.

The buildings are also equipped with Aeolian and photovoltaic energy systems.

Prices range from $500 K for the lower level apartments and $1.7 M for a penthouse.

ADDENDUM: Here’s a nice image from May 2015, taken from a nearby building. I’d say those trees are doing okay.

† Greywater is gently used water from your bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, and washing machines. It is not water that has come into contact with feces, either from the toilet or from washing diapers. Greywater may contain traces of dirt, food, grease, hair, and certain household cleaning products.

Interesting contrast between the publicity shots and the featured image.

Keep in mind that the trees probably suffered some trauma after being nursed for two years in a nursery before being hauled up to whatever floor. The featured image was taken in September of 2014.

I’m sure lots of people are watching to see how the brilliant concept meets the test of time.
