Malcolm Gladwell [ Mindset ] I was recently asked to give a public lecture at the University of Pennsylvania on the subject of “proof.” My question is: How much proof do we need about the harmfulness of something before we act? I began with the strange history of how long it took for society to grasp the seriousness of black-lung disease, and then moved into an argument about the black-lung diseases of today.

How bizarre is it that the host accused MG of biting the hand that feeds him?

If you went for a check up and your Doctor said, “you’re killing yourself” how does it then make sense for you to launch into a diatribe about how ungrateful your Doctor is for all the money you’ve spent on health insurance to keep them in business?
